Algebra can be made simpler by using manipulatives (things you can hold and move) It might seem obvious when you can see how to solve a problem but when you're new to Algebra, the abstract concept of letters replacing numbers can be overwhelming and basic maths can go out of the window.Using fruit, Lego, marbles, toys, anything a child can physically hold can be so helpful in making the abstract something they can understand. Don't worry they won't be going into their GCSEs with a bag of marbles, think of it like stabilisers on a bike or a swim float, it's an aid until they feel confident without it. Confidence being the key takeaway here..I have put together a free Parent's Guide to mastering Algebra with useful info and tips on how to support your child with this math topic. I have Year 6 in mind but this is really still relevant to anyone having problems with algebra.
