I love the links between Maths and English. Lots of mathematical vocabulary is inspired by Ancient Greeks and Romans, like these polygon names. I also love to look at the links between our calendar. Children often remember things when they find them interesting. I talk about how the calendar used to only have 10 months.So OCTober was the 8th month. Octopus, 8 legs, Octagon 8 sides.SEPTember was the 7th, sept is 7 in French, ok it's a hept (not sept) a gob, but it's close enough to help them.remember.November was the 9th month, close(ISH) to NONagon. DECember was the 10th month- DECathlon, DECade all linked to the number 10. A very common problem in maths is that children struggle when it comes to "word problems" or reasoning style questions. In the Year 6 SATs, Papers 2 & 3 are exactly this type of problem. Children will spend 90 out of 120 minutes on these types of questions and the majority of the marks available come from these types of questions. But why do so many children struggle with solving maths problems when they appear to be very capable in maths?1: A question written explicitly- as in the Arithmetic Papers- is obvious. You solve the calculation shown. In a word problem, you have to figure out what the math question is. I call this Maths Comprehension.2: Questions are often posed in unfamiliar contexts. If a child can't relate to the scenario- it can be off-putting. Scenarios can be pretty random in a SATs Paper. 3: This is a hugely common one, especially but not exclusively for EAL children. If the language used in the problem is unfamiliar this will hinder their understanding. the language could be a math specific word (multiple, prime, radius) or it could be a word or phrase they're just unfamiliar with.4: There are often multiple steps in word problems- first add, then divide etc... but in Arithmetic problems (unless it's BODMAS) it's one calculation. 5: They may simply not have had enough time to practice. Children need exposure, practice, time to explore and get familiar with a VARIETY of contexts and representations.This list is not exhaustive. But it is important that children experience word problems to be able to gather strategies and confidence.I have a few resources that can help here- apart from working with me as a tutor. This is considered an "easy" question. Could your child answer it confidently? Could they explain how they know?This requires some basic knowledge of 2D shapes and 3D shape properties. A prism always has 2 polygon faces at each end and the number of rectangles around the side correspond to the number of sides of the polygons. Hexagonal prism = 2 hexagon faces and 6 rectangles as Hexagons have 6 sides.
